Jallikattu has been based on the short story written by S. Hareesh Maoist. It is about a bull that had escaped a butchery in a Keralan village and runs astray throughout the village, causing major havoc among the residents. Kalan Varkey and Anthony run a shop where the buffalo slips out and escapes into the hilly jungles. The villagers blame the buffalo when a fire incident is called in the village, and the people start hunting for the buffalo.
With zero progress in capturing the animal, many different things start happening all around the village. Many things in the village get destroyed, and villagers blame the buffalo and Kalan for letting the buffalo escape from his butchery. When the police refused to help the villagers, they call a famous animal poacher for help.
The viewers are taken back to when Kuttachan and Anthony had a rivalry over marrying Sophie, Antony’s wife. To marry this woman, Antony had complained to the police that Kuttachan was stealing sandalwood, and due to this, Kuttachan had to serve some time in prison. Many things start happening from this moment on, and the fight to capture the animal becomes so intense that the villagers start vandalising their village. Society breaks down as the villagers hunt for the animal, but they are also hunting each other and are being hunted down.
This movie had won many awards, and it also premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. The film had earned many international awards and had received an entry for the 93rd Academy Awards.
